HEC is a non-ionic, purely water-phase thickener that was developed for latex paints and is still the reference thickener in emulsion coatings. HPMC is a methyl-substituted cellulose ether that was developed for building chemistry \u2014 it thickens, retains water, and lubricates cementitious and gypsum-based systems, and it is only occasionally used in paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The structural difference is simple but decisive. In HEC, the hydroxyl groups of cellulose are substituted with hydroxyethyl groups (\u2013OCH\u2082CH\u2082OH). In HPMC, they are substituted with a combination of methoxy (\u2013OCH\u2083) and hydroxypropyl (\u2013OCH\u2082CH(OH)CH\u2083) groups. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/tenessy.com\/products\/hpmc-hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose\/\"><u>HPMC<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;carries hydrophobic methoxy groups, its solutions have surface-active character, a lower thermal gelation point (55\u201365 \u00b0C versus 65\u201375 \u00b0C for HEC), and different interactions with latex, pigment, and salt \u2014 all of which change how it behaves in a The question is how much sensitivity it creates. <a href=\"https:\/\/tenessy.com\/products\/hec-hydroxyethyl-cellulose\/\"><u>HEC<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at typical paint dosage (0.25\u20130.45%) forms a film with good water resistance, and paints pass 300\u2013500+ wet-scrub cycles per ASTM D2486. HPMC at the same dosage tends to soften the film more, because the surface-active methoxy groups slow latex coalescence locally. This is the single most common reason a formulator who switches a paint from HEC to HPMC sees scrub resistance fall.
