How to choose: For cement-based and gypsum-based mortars, select NH Series grades with higher viscosity (NH100PC–NH200PC) for tile adhesives and waterproofing; lower viscosity grades (NH400Z, NH200T) for self-leveling and repair mortars. For cosmetics, detergents, and liquid formulations, select NS Series grades — the surface treatment ensures rapid dissolution without agglomeration in cold water.

Uses of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose

Non-instant HPMC is more suitable for mortar applications. Mortar containing large particles such as sand and gravel can be better dissolved by stirring.

Water Retention

HPMC forms a colloidal film around cement and gypsum particles, reducing water evaporation and bleeding. This extends open time, prevents premature drying, and ensures complete hydration — particularly critical in thin-layer applications like tile adhesives and skim coats.

Workability Enhancement

By increasing the lubricity of the wet mix, HPMC improves spreadability and reduces sagging. For tile adhesives, this means tiles stay in place on vertical walls without sliding (anti-sag effect). For plasters, it means smoother application with less effort.

Thickening and Stabilizing

What is the difference between surface-treated and non-surface-treated HPMC?

Non-surface-treated HPMC (NH Series) dissolves slowly in cold water, requiring thorough stirring to prevent clumping. It is ideal for dry-mix mortars where the powder is mixed with sand and cement before water addition. Surface-treated HPMC (NS Series) has a temporary protective coating that allows rapid dispersion in cold water without agglomeration, making it ideal for liquid formulations like cosmetics and detergents.

What viscosity grade should I choose for tile adhesive?

For ceramic tile adhesives, we recommend NH200PC or NH150PC (150,000–200,000 mPa·s). Higher viscosity provides better anti-sag performance and water retention, which are critical for vertical tile installation. For standard C1 tile adhesive, NH150PC is typically sufficient; for C2 or large-format tiles, NH200PC provides maximum performance.

Can HPMC be mixed with other cellulose ethers?

Yes. HPMC is commonly blended with HEMC to combine HPMC's thickening efficiency with HEMC's superior heat resistance. Some formulators also combine HPMC with starch ether (HPS) to improve anti-sagging while reducing overall cellulose ether dosage. Always test compatibility in your specific formulation.

What is the shelf life of HPMC?

When stored in original sealed packaging in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight, TENESSY HPMC has a shelf life of 24 months. Proper storage conditions are essential — moisture absorption will cause clumping and reduce solubility.
